External Connections

An easy connection that can be made to The Road is the TV show The Walking Dead. It is a very popular series, the first episode being released on October 31, 2010. It also talks about a dead world made up of survivors, but there are still animals alive, and whoever dies or gets infected by the virus, turns into a zombie. The series also goes around a dad (Rick), his son (Carl), and a group of people they find throughout. The dad is also very protective while the kid is innocent, curious, and humble. The only difference between the two kids is that because Carl had to fight for his life, instead of just surviving, he is stronger both physically and mentally. But overall, both The Road and The Walking Dead are very similar and overlap each other at many moments of the novel and the TV show.

Another similar media that can be related to The Road is I Am Legend. The movie is an adaptation of a novel published in 1954 called Omega Man. The movie itself shows the life of a survivor on a desert world that was a result of an infection caused by the attempt to cure cancer, which affected 99% of all human species. Robert Neville is followed by his dog throughout, while he tests various possible cures on infected rats and broadcasts to any other survivor left to meet him. Both The Road and I Am Legend talk about a desert world, both main characters try to survive as much as possible, and both have something to take care of, a meaning for their life. Both the father from the novel and Neville are very rational and logical, so they are not affected emotionally as others would in their situations, being the perfect fit to their surroundings.
